Hob Uid: 81461
Location :
North East Lincolnshire
Non Civil Parish
Grid Ref : TA2645009050
Summary : Franciscan Friary founded before 1240 and dissolved in 1538. It was located in the area known as the Friars, which is entirely built over.
More information : Knowles and Hadcock list a Franciscan House (Friars Minor, Conventual) at Grimsby, founded before 1240, dissolved
1538, and in the custody of York. (1)

Oliver, in 1825, stated that the "monastery is supposed to have been situated in or near a field by the present haven, known by the name of 'The Kiln Garth'. The old walls in this vicinity, still exhibit the marks of antiquity, and appear to be the scattered remains of some such edifice."(2).Shaw, in 1897, identifies the site with "the end of Swan Lane".(3). (1-3)

On a map reconstructed from a Bailiff's extent book dated 1491 in possession of the Archives Office at Grimsby the land of the Franciscan Friars is the same as the field named "The Friars" on a map of Great Grimsby c. 1812 - centred TA 2645 6905. The whole of this area is now occupied by modern development. (4)

TA 264090 area. Site of Grey Friars, Franciscan Friary. Area now occupied by modern development, no finds recorded. (5)
