Priory founded 1152, dissolved 1529. Priory of St Mary and St Helen (early charters) or of St Mary Magdalene and St Helen. Sometimes considered Cistercian nunnery, but recorded as Benedictine in 14th Century and later. (2)
Ruins of Nunkeeling Church (TA 14555015 - OS 6" 1855), built circa 1810 with traces of 13th century work. Grade 3. Most of earlier building, including the nunnery chapel which stood W of the church, was destroyed. (3)
There are still some remains of the religious buildings built into the farm buildings. (4)
The Manor House much renovated and modernised is in good condition and still inhabited. It does not now incorporate any obvious monastic remains in the ancillary buildings. Not of outstanding importance.
There are no remains of the priory, though the 19th century church is still standing but roofless. The graveyard is no longer used. Published survey (25") correct. (5) |
