Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 80888

Hob Uid: 80888
Location :
East Riding of Yorkshire
Skipsea
Grid Ref : TA1670054690
Summary : Supposed site of a medieval hall and moat; the remains of a moat and building were uncovered by excavation, the pottery suggests an occupation range of c1450-1650 AD.
More information : (TA 170 546) Site of a Hall (NR) Moat (NR) Foundations (NAT) (1)

An ancient hall stood here. (2)

On the summit of Hallgarth Hill (a natural hillock) there is an area of disturbed ground but no intelligible remains of any buildings etc. Only a very slight inner scarp remains of the supposed moat (OS 25") and this was more likely a natural elongation of the field drain now flowing off towards the E. There is no trace of the stepping stones.
NB. The "Barman Hill" at TA 1670 5469 appears to be a natural
hillock. Published Survey (25") Revised. (3)

Site with wide moat around a hillock is not typical. Some excavation; 14th century pottery. (4)

Excavations by S R Harrison of ditch and part of the moat island. The ditches enclose an area 1010' x 550' and are 20-25' wide by 9' in depth. Evidence for burning and occupation was noted, the pottery suggesting a date of circa 1450-1650. (5)

TA 170 546. Hallgarth medieval site. Scheduled No HU/93. (6)

TA 1700 5466. Hallgarth medieval hall and moat. Scheduled RSM No
26525. The ditches excavated by S R Harrison in 1970 were 6m-7.5m
wide, nearly 3m deep and enclosed an area c.300m by 170m. Tradition
maintains that the hall here was destroyed in the Civil War. (7)
