More information : (TA 03287000) Village (NR) (Site of) (Applied to earthworks in the existing hamlet of Octon) (1) Some of the chalk banks were being levelled in 1963. (2) The published remains(revised at 25") probably represent the original manorial complex of manor house, outbuildings and associated garths. The fields on each side of the road through the present hamlet, from TA 03556951 to TA 03117010, bear vague traces of depopulation (including the published remains at TA 0339677) indicating a typical 'street' village with garths behind. (3) Mainly as described by F1. The remains of St Michael's Church are still discernable, at TA 03146985 as turf covered banks about 0.5m high and 15m E/W by 7.8m N/S, set inside a rectangular turf-banked enclosure 560m E/W by 510m N/S.
