SJ 94047045. Ridge Hall moated site and annexe. The highest moat in Cheshire (at 230m) and the only one located on a hillside. The island measures c45m x 36m and is surrounded on all sides except the NW by a moat averaging 7m wide x 1.3m deep, waterlogged in its NE arm and the N end of its SE arm, but dry elsewhere. A causeway gives access across the SE arm into a grassy annexe measuring 50m x 60m that is bordered on three sides by a dry ditch up to 4m wide x 0.4m deep. The original Ridge Hall was largely destroyed in the Civil War and replaced by the present Grade II structure that has 17th-19th and 20th century additions. (2)
