Summary : The North Staffordshire Railway was created to link Crewe and Macclesfield with Burton and Trent via Stoke, the Crewe and Burton section opening in 1848 and the Macclesfield section in 1849. Under the same authorisation act, a branch to Norton Bridge and Colwich, both on the Grand Junction Railway was also granted, being completed in 1848-9. A branch was also authorised to Sandbach, opening in 1848 and closing in 1971. The line was electrified in 1967 and remains a major trunk route.
More information : (SJ 900666 - SJ 981539) Dismantled Railway (NAT) (1) A section of the North Rode to Uttoxeter line of the former North Staffordshire Railway opened in 1849. The North Road to Leek section closed to goods in 1964 and is not shown as extant in 1978 (3). The North Staffordshire Railway comprised a network of lines in The Potteries (see SJ 85 SW 11 for plan of network) (2-3)
