HULTON ABBEY

Cistercian Abbey founded in 1219 and dissolved in1538. Most of the walls of the church ahve been excavated and at the junction of the east end of the north aisle, and parallel to the north wall of the aisle, was a large trench filled with boulders. This may have been cut subsequent to the erection of the church to give added support to the foundations. The cruciform church an most of the claustral buildings have been excavated, the majority of the work being 13th century.
