Summary : Cistercian Abbey founded in 1219 and dissolved in1538. Most of the walls of the church ahve been excavated and at the junction of the east end of the north aisle, and parallel to the north wall of the aisle, was a large trench filled with boulders. This may have been cut subsequent to the erection of the church to give added support to the foundations. The cruciform church an most of the claustral buildings have been excavated, the majority of the work being 13th century.
More information : (SJ 90534916) Abbey (NR) (Site of) (1) Cistercian Abbey, founded 1219, dissolved 1538 (2). Excavations of the foundation walls took place in 1884 (3), 1930 (4) and 1959-61 (5).Some of the human bones found were considered by Simms (4) to be possibly associated with an (alleged) adjacent barrow. The 1884 finds went to Keele Hall, the remainder to the Stoke-on-Trent Museum. The exposed foundations are being preserved (5). Surveyed at 1:2500 (6). Full monastic history (7). (2-7) Excavations have taken place between 1973 and 1979 on the site of Hulton Abbey. Graves and wooden coffins were exposed in the chancel and from these a 15th century gold ring and a bulla of Pope Innocent VI (1352-62) were recovered.
