Mottisfont Abbey. 18th century and later formal gardens, pleasure grounds and landscape park at Mottisfont Abbey. with additions of 1936 by G Jellicoe, 1938 by Norah Lindsay, and 1957 by G S Thomas. The knot garden was designed by G Jellicoe in 1936. It is on several levels and comprises a circle of clipped yews with an elaborate lead urn on stone pedestal with an avenue of pleached limes leading from it. There are also extensive lawns, a ha-ha, a spring pool and an 18th century summerhouse. The park also features specimen trees, many of which were replanted during the 1960s. The walled kitchen garden was planted as a rose garden in 1957.(2)
The gardens were first laid out from 1706 by Richard Mill who also carried out planting within the park. Further additions to the gardens were made during the 19th century. The current formal designs were created by Geoffrey Jellicoe in 1936-37 and Norah Lindsay in 1938 for Gilbert Russell. (3)
