More information : (SU447227) The Castle [NAT] (1)

The Castle, fragments transferred from Netley Abbey 1770 by Thos Dummer with an added tower as a folly and eyecatcher. (2)

In the grounds SE of Cranbury, some fragments of Netley Abbey have been re-erected. They were transferred to Cranbury in the 1760s. The tower feature of course is essentially c. 1770. The windows are typical of such a date. But bits to the N are medieval, especially a number of perp bosses. In front of the tower is part of the N transept. It is not easy to identify anything precisely under the ivy. But the fragment seems to consist of two polygonal piers with angle shafts, pushed together. (3)
