Summary : 16th century dovecote at Basing House, built in an angle of a garden wall. Irregular octagon on plan with a conical hipped tile roof and built of brick in English bond, with diaper patterning in blue headers. The doorway has a heavy solid frame; in the roof above this is a dormer with a weather-boarded front of ledges and pigeon-holes.

SU6652 Octagonal dovecote in the remains of early formal gardens, 1530-60. (2)

SU6652, 6653 Basing House, Dovecote 16th c. Inserted at the angle in the Garden wall. An irregular octagon with a conical hipped tile roof surmounted by a finial, the eaves being heavy beams on projecting brackets. Red brickwork in English bond, with diaper patterning (incomplete) in blue headers; offset and plinths. The doorway has a heavy solid frame; in the roof above this is a dormer with a weather-boarded front of ledges and pigeon-holes. [Full description] Listed grade II*. (3)
