Bronze Age burial site at Capesthorne (2) Sainter refers to two tumuli in Capesthone Park (3) (2-3).
A round barrow with an average diameter of 17.0m. and 1.5m high. Published survey (25") revised. There is no trace of another barrow in the area, though there are natural mounds which may have been mistaken for barrows (4).
SJ 8451 7256. Bowl barrow 450m SE of Capesthorne Hall. Scheduled RSM No 22575. An earthen mound measuring 20m in diameter and up to 2m high, situated on a local high point in woodland. See SJ 87 SW 25 for the probable second barrow identified by Sainter (5).
The Bronze Age round barrow, centred at SJ 8451 7257, is visible as an earthwork mound on historic aerial photography but is obscured by tree cover on the latest 2010 vertical imagery. It was mapped as part of the Cheshire National Mapping Programme project and measures approximately 17.5 metres in diameter. The barrow appears to have been respected by post medieval ploughing (UID 1602012) (6-7). |
