More information : A tumulus at SJ 874720 at Bearhurst, measuring 50ft. in diameter and 6ft. high, was excavated in 1965-6 by David Bethell. Finds included flints, some pottery sherds, and the remains of two BA urns one of which contained a cremation. The urns are now in the Grosvenor Museum. (1) A round barrow at SJ 87387203, 1.3 m. high and 22.0 m. in diameter. Surveyed at 1/2500. The curator of Grosvenor Museum, Chester, confirmed the whereabouts of the urns. (Acc No 3-4 P 1967) (2)
SJ 8738 7202. Bowl barrow 370m ESE of Bearhurst Farm. Scheduled RSM No 22583. A flat-topped circular mound of sand and earth 17m in diameter and up to 1.3m high. Limited excavation of the barrow in the 1960s located a cremation in a collared urn covered by a round based vessel. The cinerary urn stood in an ash-filled cremation pit. Additionally over 160 flint fragments were also found, including a leaf-shaped arrowhead and many triangular points. A modern fence surrounds the barrow. (3)
