Summary : Bronze Age bowl barrow surviving as an earthwork. Site of alleged barrows (2) Not antiquities. Urns & human remains found.
More information : [SJ 8563 7453] Tumulus [O.E.] [SJ 8567 7446] Tumulus [O.E.] (1) Probable encrusted Bronze Age urn found in grounds of Birtles Hall where there are numerous mounds - some tumuli and some natural. Other urns with calcined human remains have also been found here. [See SJ 87 NE 3 for possible connection] (2-3) The OS has applied 'Tumulus' to, in one case, a tree-ring (the more northerly feature) and, in the other, an irregular depression, both of which are situated on large natural mounds. No barrow was found in the grounds of Birtles Hall. (4) SJ 8563 7452. Bowl barrow 230m WSW of Birtles Hall. Scheduled RSM No 22577. A bowl barrow located on the summit of a natural rise, comprising a slightly oval earthen mound up to 1m high with maximum dimensions of 20m by 19m. (5)
