More information : (SJ 84337623) Alderley Mill (NAT) (1) Alderley Mill in good condition, see GP. (2) Nether Aderley Corn Mill, Cheshire (101/SJ 844763) This is a National Trust property standing on the east side of the A34 road in the centre of the village. The distinctive mill building with its massive red sandstone walls, and long sloping roof of Cheshire flags, is of sixteenth-century date although a mill has occupied the site since the late fourteenth century. The rear wall of the mill forms the dam of a small lake which provides water for the wheels and serves as a moat for Nether Alderley Old Hall. Two overshot waterwheels, of 13ft and 12ft diameter, power what are, in effect, two separate mills in the same building. Each waterwheel turns its own machinery independently of the other, the lower wheel using water from the tailrace of the upper. The mill operated until 1939, fell derelict and was taken over by the National Trust in 1950. Restoration began in 1967 and is still progressing. All the machinery is operational and turns by water during public opening hours - Wednesdays and Sundays between April and October inclusive, 2pm-7pm. Party visits outside these times can be arranged with the warden, Mr HW Johnson, 16 Hawthorne Grove, Wilmslow, Cheshire. Tel: 099-64 27259. (1)
