Summary : Site of an Augustinian grange of Ranton Priory. A timber-framed farm-building, possibly Elizabethan, certainly late 17th century, stood here until the mid 20th century, when it was demolished and replaced by an entirely rebuilt house. |
More information : "In the Taxatio of Pope Nicholas IV (1288) Ronton (Ranton) is recorded as possessing ... one carucate at Ellerton Grange". (1)
Ellerton was one of a group of granges maintained by the Augustinian monks of Ranton Priory (SJ 82 SW 11). (2)
(SJ 72652597) Ellerton Grange (NAT). (3)
Farm identified with Md Grange. The farmhouse (shown on OS 6") was demolished about 10 years ago and a new building erected partly on the same site. The destroyed building was of brick and stone with some timber-framing.
"It was partly Elizabethan but mainly William and Mary". No trace of the demolished farm-house survives. The farm-buildings are of comparatively recent appearance. There are many dug ponds, some described on the OS 6" 1954 as Fish Ponds, around the farm, both in Staffs and Shropshire. (4) |
