More information : [SJ 60749410] St. Oswald's Well. [G.T.] (1) St. Oswald's Well is reputed by tradition to be the site of the place where Oswald fell fighting (A.D. 731) and was buried. The open well is reputed to have been made by pilgrims to his grave carrying away with them a portion of the soil from his grave mound until only a hollow in the ground remained. (2) The well is a small pit, about 8ft. deep. (3) The water has of late been drying up. "The water is not very bright, but the well is substantially walled inside, and two or three deeply worn steps lead to the water." (a) (4) The well is correctly shown on 25" A.M. Traditionally said to be on the sopt where the sainted King Oswald was slain by Penda, King of Mercia, at a place called Maserfelth (RN:582) (d). (8) The well is a stone-lined pit about 1m E-W by 2m N-S; three steps lead down to the water from the S; a flagstone covers the northern half. It is fenced off within a pasture field, and is becoming. No change at 1:2500 to published depiction. (9)
