Earthwork Class F. [Homestead Moats - simple enclosures formed into artificial islands by water moats] Barrow Old Hall -(2).
".....one ot the very few perfectly moated houses remaining in Lancashire. The hall, now converted into a country cottage has never been extensive.... its original construction shows a timber framework.... braced together by plain crosspieces, its space filled in with brickwork..... ....Unfortunately the house has suffered a great deal of alteration... the only original part now left is the end shown in the view, which is 18 ft.6" wide and contains the sitting -room, with chamber above.... and a small wing at at the back 11 ft. long and 10 ft. 6 ins. wide..." (3).
A 25" A.M. survey of the moat has been made (4).
SJ 561 895. Barrow Old Hall, Scheduled (5).
Excavation between 1986 and 1987 demonstrated that the fourth arm of the moat, on the N side, was infilled c1924 when the last surviving building on the platform was demolished. An area of 10 x 8m was uncovered on the platform, exposing a clay floor with associated sandstone footings. Beneath the floor was a number of clay and pebble-filled post-holes; further post-holes were located in an area identified as a post-medieval garden, dated to the 16th century (6-7).
SJ 5617 8958. Barrow Old Hall moated site. Scheduled RSM No 13434 (8).
The site was mapped as part of the Cheshire National Mapping Programme project. Parts of the medieval moat are visible as an earthwork ditch centred at approximately SJ 5617 8958 on aerial photography and though obscured by tree cover on the latest 2010 vertical aerial photography, probably remain extant. Elements of the eastern, southern and western arms of the moat were visible, the remainder obscured by tree cover (9-10). |
