Summary : The remains of a barrow or medieval motte which has survived as an earthwork. It is a steep sided earthen mound 19 metres in diameter and up to 2.8 metres high. The flat top is about six metres in diameter. It has been interpreted as a motte or a large barrow. Excavations in the 19th century found the earthwork to be built of black soil and the site was scheduled in 1993 as a motte.

Castle Hill Cob. 66 ft. in diam. "It has been opened and was found to contain nothing but a quantity of black soil." (2)

'Castle Cob' is an artificial mound 2.7, high, with steep sides, and a flat top. It does not look like a barrow or motte and its nature could not be deduced.
Published survey (25") revised. (3)

Very large barrow, 25 yds diameter, 3 yds high. Could in fact be a motte, steep sides, flat top, but no traces of a ditch, or bailey. Surmounted by a water tank. Owner: M K King, Castle Cob, Kingswood, Frodsham. (4)

No change since report of 23 6 64. The mound has a relatively modern, unweathered appearance. (5)

SJ 5338 7341. Castle Cob motte. Scheduled RSM No 22595. A steep-sided earthen mound 19m in diameter and up to 2.8m high. The flat top is c.6m in diameter. Limited antiquarian excavation found the motte to be built of black soil. The stone steps and concrete base of an old summerhouse on the side of the motte are excluded from the Scheduling. (6)
