Monument Number 71228

Hob Uid: 71228
Location :
Cheshire West and Chester
Utkinton and Cotebrook
Grid Ref : SJ5546066210
Summary : Bronze Age round barrow surviving as an earthwork.
More information : [SJ 5547 6620] High Billinge Tumulus. (1)

The barrow is situated at SJ 5546 6621. See survey. (2)

A round barrow, 30.0m in diameter, 1.8m in height. No visible
remains of a ditch. Surmounted by trees.

Published 1:2500 survey, 1970, correct. (3)

SJ 555662. High Billinge: round earthen mound; diameter 32m;
height 4.4m; tree-and-turf-covered. (4)

The mound as described, is situated on a prominent hill-top,
and within an area of modern deciduous woodland. It is in good
condition, although slightly disturbed by tree planting. Although
somewhat larger than other barrows in the area, and surprising
sharply defined, the absence of documentary evidence or
associated features weighs against it being of medieval origin.
It is scheduled as a barrow. (5)

SJ 5546 6621. High Billinge bowl barrow. Scheduled RSM No 23705. (6)

This feature was mapped from lidar imagery as part of the 'Cheshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping Project: the Chester environs' in 2019. The barrow is visible as earthworks on lidar imagery in the north-west of the parish of Utkinton. It is extant on the latest 2016 vertical photography. (7-8)
