St Giles Hospital

Hob Uid: 70524
Location :
Shropshire
Shrewsbury
Grid Ref : SJ5066011830
Summary : Founded circa 1136 to the West of St Giles Church as a leper hospital and a hospital for the infirm. Dissolved in 1546.
More information : (SJ 50721185) Site of (NAT) St. Gile's Hospital (NR) (1)

St. Giles Hospital for lepers and the infirm was first recorded in
1155 but was probably in existence about 1136. Its Medieval estate
appears to have been restricted to the suburb of Abbey Foregate and
included a messuage near English Bridge. It was dissolved in 1546.
The present church of St. Giles (SJ 10721184) was probably originally
designed to serve the hospital; which stood to its west where
foundations were still visible in the early 19th century. Part of the
walls of St. Giles Hospital and the porch are incorporated in the
fabric. The present hospital which was built in the mid 18th century
is a small, brick building north of the church consisting of four
single-room dwellings. (2-5)
