Location :
Telford and Wrekin
Wrockwardine
Grid Ref : SJ5976011180
Summary : The site of a medieval fortified manor house, possibly of early 14th century date. Fragments of walling and the earthwork remains of a moat and fishpond survive. Alleged ridge and furrow between the moat and the fishpond were investigated and found to be drainage ditches.
More information : [SJ 59761118] CASTLE [G.T.] (remains of) [T.I.] (1)

Charlton Castle, a homestead moat. Fragments of ancient masonry remain in various spots.

Only the mound remains. The Castle received licence to crenellate in 1317. Scheduled. (2-5)

Charlton Castle, a probable fortified manor house, of which the rectangular moat, now dry, and fragments of walling only remain. 100.0m. to the S.E. is a large, waterfilled rectangular fishpond.
Published 1/2500 survey revised. (6)

Noted in list of moated sites in Shropshire SJ 597112; complete manorial moat with fishpond (7).

SJ 597 111. Charlton Castle. Scheduled. (8)

SJ 59751119. The moated island measures approximately 55 metres by 70 metres and is surrounded by a partially waterlogged moat. The curtain wall which once ran around the island is now represented by a discontinuous bank up to 0.6 metre high. The distribution of the collapsed and upstanding masonry remains on the island indicate that the castle consisted of ranges of buildings arranged around a central courtyard. South east of the moated site lies a waterfilled fishpond measuring roughly 30 metres by 92 metres. Scheduled. (9)

Listed by Cathcart King. (10)

APs taken in 1995 suggested an area of ridge and furrow between the moat and the fishpond. Field investigation has shown theses features to be later frainage ditches. (11)
