At least four bridges have crossed the Severn at Atcham at various
times. In 1221 the Abbot of Lilleshall is recorded as having
levied a toll on the new bridge which replaced a ferry operating
during the times of his predecessor. In 1550, Sir Rowland Hill built
a stone bridge with eighteen arches at this point. This bridge was
replaced in either 1769 (Authy 3) 1776 (Authy 4) or 1796
(Authy 2) by a seven-arched bridge designed by John Gwynne.
This bridge still stands, and has been superseded by a ferro-concrete
road bridge immediately to the north, built in 1929. Elmwood
piles from an earlier bridge were found during construction of the
modern one. 18th cent bridge scheduled. (2,3,4,5)
