Summary : A Roman altar and two corinthian capitals were among stones discovered during the restoration of Uppington church in 1885. The altar is 2.5' high and 1' wide and is located 5m south of the nave of the church. The base of a column, tesserae and building materials were found during the digging of drains in a neighbouring field. |
More information : A Roman altar and fragments of two corinthian capitals were among stones discovered during the restoration of Uppington church in 1885 (SJ 59740938). The 2 1/2' high by 1' wide altar had a raised ring about 7 1/2" diam. on one side with a mark resembling a letter "F" on the other. The altar was placed in a hollow tree in the churchyard butis now lost. In a neighbouring garden the base of a column, tesserae and building materials have been found whilst digging drains. (1)
