More information : Site of Roman pottery and brickfield between River
Severn and Ismore Coppice (SJ 55810905). A proton magnetometer
survey showed a disturbance 40 ft. square with probable ditches to
south-east. The area was partly excavated revealing two working
floors, a pit, two kiln pads and an unused oven foundation. As no
actual kiln structures were found it is assumed that the tiles
were fire in clamps. No pottery wasters were found on the site.
A trodden six inches thick clay floor with slots and post holes
and building material pressed into the surface indicates forms
of wooden structures. In sweepings around the edge of this
floor were some Samian sherds. The second floor was similar
covering about 1000 square feet with iron nails being found on
it. One kiln pad was in the sealed ash layer the other in the
red fill above. The unused oven foundation was three and
a half inches average diameter with seven inches wide tile surround.
Pottery found suggests that the tilery was in use throughout
the 2nd century. (1)
