Summary : The remains of a medieval standing cross in the churchyard of St Lawrence's Church, Stoak. The cross, which is Listed Grade II, has been broken off half-way up the shaft and a sundial set on top. The base is a single massive block of local sandstone, square and measuring 0.72 metres wide and 0.2 metres high above the turf. The socket is square and 0.35 metres wide into which is set the lower part of a shaft, square at the base, rising to octagonal through darts carved at the corners. The shaft stands 1.25 metres high and a sundial plate has been inserted into the broken top. The gnomon in missing. Scheduled. |
More information : (SJ 42367325) Sun Dial (NAT). (1) Stoak (St Lawrence) "The sundial in the churchyard forms part of an ancient cross, probably cut down in Puritan times. The dial is inscribed with the initials &FE TE' possibly those of the churchwardens responsible for the adaptation". (2) The remains consist of socketed stone and shaft both of red sandstone. The socket stone is partially embedded in the ground, and is square with sides of 0;7m. It has broached corners, and an octagonal upper surface. It is 0.2m high above ground level. The shaft is 0.4m square at the base with corners broached 0.3m above the socket stone to form an octagonal section. It is 1.2m high, and is surmounted by a diminutive metal sundial.
