Summary : A parish church, now educational centre, of 14th century and circa 1500 date. It was restored 1861-2 by James Harrison and 1890-92 by J P Seddon and (without deconsecration) converted to an educational centre in the 1970s by the County Architect's Department for Cheshire County Council. Constructed from red sandstone, it comprises a three-stage tower, three-bay aisled nave continuous with the chancel and aisled chapels, north porch and two-storey south porch, now office. Since the Middle Ages the Church of St Mary was associated with Chester Castle and subsequently with the County Gaol.
More information : [SJ 40556584] St. Mary on the Hill Church [TU] (1) Though founded in Norman times (date unknown) none of the fabric is earlier than the 14th c. The tower is 16th c. The church has suffered much damage and neglect. (2) St. Mary's largely 15th-16thc. (3) In normal use. (4) Externally the masonry looks Victorian except for the lower part of the W tower which has an early 16th century doorway. Restored 1861-2 and 1890-1. The interior is Perpendicular except for the Decorated tower and chancel arches. The SE chapel was built about 1443 and rebuilt in 1693. (5) Now redundant. Owned by Cheshire County Council.
