Summary : A Motte and bailey castle surviving as an earthwork, comprising a mound with a strong encircling earthwork, except on the south where the defence is the Pulford brook. Cathcart King states that it is first mentioned in the late 12th century and was ordered to be held against Owen Glendower in 1403. Scheduled.

Pulford, a Motte and Bailey castle (2) comprising a mound with strong encircling earthwork, except on the south where the defence is the Pulford Brook.(3) Scheduled as 'Pulford Castle'. (2-4)

An annotated 25" survey of the motte has been made. (5)

Published survey (25" 1964) checked and found correct. (6)

Motte and bailey mentioned in a document of about 1190-1220. (7)

A motte, with small bailey to the NW. Published 1:2500 survey, 1964, correct. (8)

Late 12th century in date. It was ordered to be held against Owen Glendower in 1403. (9)

Medieval motte & bailey visible as earthworks on historic vertical photography and lidar imagery in the parish of Pulford, centred at SJ 3752 5870. This is extant on the latest 2017 lidar imagery and was mapped as part of the Cheshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping Project. (10)
