More information : (SJ 29740202) Motte and Bailey (NR) (1)
Both the motte and bailey at Wilmington have been damaged, the ditch of the motte has been filled in, and the defences of the bailey, apart from a 6 foot scarp to the north, have been erased, though their line is still traceable. A steep-sided spur to the south of the motte may have formed part of the defended area. The motte, is small and high: 14 foot above the bailey, and only about 25 foot across the top. A collapsed stone building on the top is now considered to have been a viewpoint or gazebo. (2,3)
A motte 30.0m in diameter rising to 6.0m above the bailey which is delineated by a scarp slope averaging 0.8m high. Published survey 25" revised. (4)
