Bronze Age round barrow excavated by W H Lamplough and J R Lidster in 1949. A collared urn of Longworth Secondary Series, Form I/IV, 10.25ins. high was found inverted over a cremation. (Corpus No. 1158) and a Longworth Secondary Series, South Eastern Style, Form I, 8.3 ins high was also recovered. (Corpus No 1159). A Longworth Secondary Series, Form IIB, 3.5ins high was found to contain charcoal and a few fragments of cremated bone. (Corpus No. 1160). Archival material with W.H. Lamplough. Round barrow situated on a level ridge overlooking Hard Dale Gill towards the western edge of Broxa Forest. The earth and stone mound stands up to 0.8 metres high and 11 metres in diameter. In the centre of the mound is a hollow caused by partial excavation in 1949 during which the remains of 3 cremations were uncovered.(5) |
