Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 63943

Hob Uid: 63943
Location :
East Riding of Yorkshire
Elloughton-cum-Brough
Grid Ref : SE9379926791
Summary : A Roman 2nd century AD dedication slab from the civitas Petuaria (see SE 92 NE 20), reused in a 4th century AD building at Brough. It recorded the dedication of a new proscaeium (stage) in the theatre at Petuaria.
More information : The identification of the civitas of Petuaria with
the Roman walled enclosure at Brough-on-Humber (see SE 92 NW 12)
has depended almost entirely on a 2nd century limestone
dedication-slab found in 1937 (a) incorporated in the masonry
of an early 4th century internal building. The stone commemorated
the dedication of a new proscaenium (stage) of the theatre at
vicus Petuaria by a junior magistrate Marcus Ulpius Janaurius.
Excavations of the site in 1958-61 (d), however, revealed a
chronology of military rather than civil fortification and
buildings, and the location of Petuaria was speculatively placed
elsewhere (see SE 92 NE 20). (1)
