Summary : Two Roman mosaic floors overlying a hypocaust were uncovered at Sturton Farm in 1816-17 along with a sword, battle-axe and jet crucifx, one of the mosaics was uncovered under a barn in 1964, a villa? A Roman trumpet brooch was found nearby.
More information : [Name SE 96870470] Roman Villa [G.S.] (Site of) [SE 96930461 and SE 96960460] Roman Pavements found (1-2) [SE 96900464;(3) SE 96790463 (4)] Foundations of a Roman bath and two tessellated pavements discovered in the early 19th century at Sturton. Also from Sturton, found on a new housing estate [at SE 96960495] (6) an Antonine enamelled trumpet brooch. (3-7) It was not possible to confirm any of the above published sites. The present residents of the house have no knowledge of the finds. Mrs E. Rudkin (Willoughton) has the brooch in her personal collection, she confirmed the find spot as indicated. (8) SE 96900464. Two patterned tesselated pavements overlying hypocausts were exposed in a Sturton Farm in 1816-17, and engraved by Fowler in 1818. A sword, battle-axe and jet crucifix are also reported to have been found. The whereabouts of these is not known. One pavement was found beneath a barn floor in 1964. SE 96960492. Bronze trumpet-brooch, inlaid with blue enamel on the head, was found on a housing estate in 1953. In Scunthorpe Museum, acc. code SW AB. (9) HU 18 Listed as a possible site of a Roman villa. (10) An examination of all available air photographs revealed no evidence of the Roman villa described by the previous authorities. (11)
