Eynsham is mentioned in 1215 when Abbot Adam grants to the burgoynes the liberties and customs of the burgesses of Oxford. In 1366 thirty one houses in the new borough and some 300 in the old town are mentioned. (2)
(SP 430096). Borough centred around Newland Street with back lanes remaining on N and S sides; many property boundaries also remain. (3)
The tax returns of 1334 show that Eynsham's assessed wealth was the lowest of all Oxford towns. It is suggested that Eynsham's growth was by this time markedly affected by the growth of Oxford and other neighbouring markets. In 1377 only 211 adults were assessed for the poll tax, placing Eynsham among the smallest Oxford towns. By the C16th, tax assessments indicate a village community dominated by small farmers and monastic servants. It retained the institutions of a borough, including the portmoot and officers, but these institutions had become moribund by the late C16th. (4) |
