More information : (SE 81646749) Roman Villa (R) (Site of) (1) Roman Villa 1/4 mile NE of Langton East Farm (2) and 415ft from the S field hedge (3) discovered by Mortimer and Abbot in 1899: excavation exposed a hypocaust and finds of glass, tesserae, coloured wallplaster and a coin of Trajan (AD 98-117) (a). Site re-opened in 1926 by Collier, uncovering a piece of tessellated pavement, now in Malton Museum (b). Excavations were carried out by Corder and Kirk in 1930 (3) see plan. Various interpretations have been made of the excavations (3)(4)(5) but in general the site begins with a quadrangular ditched enclosure dated AD 71-80. (Stead interprets this as an Iron Age farmstead (6)). This is followed by House 1 with outbuildings. It is not firmly dated but is probably 2nd or 3rd century. This is rebuilt as a corridor house (2) in two phases in the 4th century. Activity on the site was mainly agricultural but included metal working (7). (2-7) Site under stubble. No surface traces visible. (8)
NK 18 The main house of the villa was of three phases:- 1. An oblong house. 2. A corridor house on a different alignment with hypocausts. 3. A corridor house with alterations and two more hypocausts. There was a bath suite in the earlier oblong building. (9) |
