More information : (SE 81106744) Roman Villa (R) (Site of) (1) A piece of tessellated pavement and a widespread scatter of tesserae, tiles, pottery and ashes were found (1863) (2) sited SE 81106744 from Plan (3). The finds, including wall plaster were presented to Yorks Museum and Malton Literary Institute. Stone foundations found, the longest of which ran N-S 'for about 40 yards', at its S end was a large, square dressed block of sandstone with a shaft-hole (2). Webster, referring to the excavated Ro Villa, 400 yds to the E (SE 86 NW 3) states "The two sites in such close proximity can hardly not be associated in some way", and by implication, suggests this site as an integral part of a complex Ro Settlement. (2-4) The site was under a root crop at the time of field investigation and no surface indications were apparent. (5)
