More information : (ST 50083885) The Great Church. Worked on from St. Dunstan's time onward, with particular activity after the Norman conquest, but all this destroyed by a fire in 1184. Rebuilding started immediately, apparently as Late Norman Transitional but quickly changing to Early Gothic (?influenced by Wells Cathedral) and the church was dedicated early in the 14th century. Enlargements, particularly at the east and west ends, and alterations continued up to the Dissolution, after which the church was stripped and left to fall into ruin. (1-4)
