Summary : Landscape park and formal gardens to Herstmonceux Castle and Herstmonceux Place. The park was first documented during the 12th century and enlarged in about 1441. Little is known about the park's history during the 18th century and 19th century, except for some tree planting and reduction in its area. Some tree planting also took place during the 20th century. The gardens include a walled garden which is probably 15th century in date. By the late 18th century gardens had been established in the castle moat, these were removed in 1933 when the moat was re-flooded. The park and formal gardens were restored and developed between 1933-35.
More information : Parkland, wood and agricultural land, 148ha, round C15 castle. Open parkland, with some areas returned to agricultural or forestry. Garden activity uncertain before C20. (1)
