Summary : A Beaker found by William Greenwell in a barrow near Cissbury, apparently with an inhumation. Details are few, and the precise location of the barrow is unknown, although it is known that Greenwell was at Cissbury in 1867-8 assisting Colonel Lane Fox in his excavations of the flint mines within the hillfort (see asociated monuments). |
More information : Grinsell lists a beaker from Cissbury `known to have been found in a barrow.' The exact barrow is unknown. The beaker is part of the Greenwell Collection in the BM (1).
The beaker is listed as no 071 in Musson's corpus of Bronze Age pottery from Sussex. He states that it was found `with a skeleton in the barrow' (2).
The beaker features as no 989 in Clarke's corpus. He places it within his East Anglian group (3).
(TQ 1408) The Beaker is published in the BM's catalogue of the Greenwell Collection (BM acc no 79 12-9 2099). The catalogue entry states that it was found in a round barrow and accompanied by an inhumation (4).
Note: Greenwell appears not to have published anything concerning this Beaker and its discovery. However he was certainly at Cissbury in 1867-8 when Lane-Fox was excavating within Cissbury Ring (see TQ 10 NW 1, 4). For barrows in the Cissbury area see TQ 10 NW 15, 52, 82 and 88 (5).
