Brean Down

Hob Uid: 617246
Location :
Somerset
Sedgemoor
Brean
Grid Ref : ST2960758714
Summary : Boundary walls and ditches of a supposed Bronze Age field system were investigated during excavations on Brean Down in the 1980s. They were subsequently interpreted as stock control enclosures and associated with a very nearby probable Bronze Age settlement.
More information : (SU 296587 located from plan-fig 3). Boundary walls and ditches were located during the 1983-7 excavations. The walls comprised of large facing stones with an infill of rubble. This system of stone banks and ditches is very similar to Gwithian, and probably formed enclosures for stock control. Some of the deposits show evidence of ploughing, but this is not demonstrated within the ceramic assemblage. (1)
