King William's Block is the south west building of the hospital and was designed by Christopher Wren. Construction started in 1698 and was completed in 1705. It consists of three ranges; south and west dormitories and a hall, forming a half H-shaped block with a courtyard enclosed on the east side by a colonnade. the hall is divided into the Upper and Painted Hall. All the painted ceilings and other painted decorations are the work of Sir James Thornhill who was commissioned in 1707, these were completed by 1725. The western range is not thought to be the work of Wren it had often been attributed to Vanbrugh but is now thought to be the work of Hawksmoor (2-4)
