Summary : Deer park enclosed in 1433 by Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester. The first Park Keeper was instated in 1486 with deer present by 1510. The park covered an area of 200 acres and was enclosed by a timber fence. The emparking involved the diversion of the Roman road which ran across the site of the park and was replaced with a road, Maze Hill, which formed the eastern park boundary. The park was also bounded by a road on the western side, Crooms Hill. The park was redesigned during the mid 17th century to become a formal park (TQ 37 NE 72) |
More information : In 1433 Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester, was granted a licence for the construction of a house (NAR. no TQ 37 NE 15) and creation of a deer park in Greenwich. The first Park Keeper was instated in 1486 with deer present by 1510. The park was 200 acres in area, enclosed by a timber fence. It's formation involved the diversion of the Roman road which ran across the site of the park and was replaced with a road (Maze Hill) which formed the eastern park boundary.
