Hospital Of St Mary Magdalene

Hob Uid: 608957
Location :
Derbyshire
Erewash
Dale Abbey
Grid Ref : SK4100038000
Summary : Preceptory of Knights of St Lazarus and Leper Hospital c1297-1375.
More information : SK 4138. The preceptory of Locko (the only regular preceptory of theLazarite order in England) owed direct allegiance to the mother house in Paris, not Burton Lazars and hence was regarded as an alien
establishment during the 14th cent wars with France. There was a
hospital dedicated to St Mary Magdalene attached to the preceptory.
During the wars with France the preceptory had to make large payments
to Kings Hall, Cambridge and in 1347 the master of Burton Lazars
became preceptor. It ceased to be a hospital and preceptory by
1375. (1-3)
