SE 89800708] St.John's Well [A.T.] (2)

A manor or camera of the Knights Hospitallers at Bottesford was leased out in 1338. The present manor house was originally the gatehouse (4) or occupies the site of the gatehouse (6), of the preceptory. Simon de Vere made over the greater part of the manor to the Templars of Willoughton about 1267-70, and after the suppression of the order the land came into the hands of the Hospitallers. A spring arched over with stone, known as the Templars Bath, was probably a dipping well. (3-6)

The Manor House has been recently restored but shows some work of a 17th c date, (see GP AO/64/40/5) but it could not be recognised as a gatehouse. The Templar's Bath survives,(see GPs AO/62/55/4 and 5). St. John's Well is a small, simple structure in brick and stone, enclosing a water-pipe exit. There is some evidence of old stone work inside. (See GP.AO/64/40/4) (7)

St John's Well. Well-house. Mainly C19, with earlier origins. Contains stone water-trough. Rare type of structure in the region and traditionally associated with the Knights Templars. Grade II.(8)

Bottesford, Lincs. Camera; leased in 1338 [listed under The Knights Hospitallers](9)
