More information : A mid to late 18th century Dovecote at Moat Farm south east of Wickersley. Built of coursed, dressed sandstone with a stone slate roof. (1)
A new evaluation as part of the Monument Protection Programme Assesment has been carried out on 30th December 1998 after the national evaluation of dovecotes carried out by Oxford Archaeological Unit in 1995 had identified the dovecote at Moat Farm, south east of Wickerley, as being potentially of national importance. The dovecote was described as an important and unusual form of dovecote built in a decorative style. The nesting holes were built in wood and plaster and were a rare survival of this type of construction. By the time of the Monument Protection Programme Assesment the interior of the dovecote had been completely stripped and the building converted into a residential property. As the removal of the internal features and its conversion into a residential property has destroyed much of the archaeological potential of the site, the dovecote is not recommended for scheduling. It was felt however that some below ground features survive but these alone do not warrant management through scheduling. (2)
