Low Cross

Hob Uid: 60190
Location :
North Yorkshire
Ryedale
Appleton-le-Moors
Grid Ref : SE7342288199
Summary : Limestone slab, set on a cobbled plinth, it is thought that the stone may be a prehistoric standing stone which has been re-used as a wayside cross, but this is uncertain, possible evidence that a later plaque has been added
More information : (SE 73418820) Low Cross (NR)
Little Cross (NR) (1-2)

Low Cross is a flat stone with a hole through it, which may be
prehistoric. There are many stones at its base and there is some
trace of a mound. (3)

Low Cross or Little Cross is a stone 1.3m high, 0.2m thick, and
0.8m in width, with a hole 0.1m square through the short axis. It
is set into a modern pavement together with several other small
stones. There is now no trace of a mound. A rectangular
indentation in the south face indicates a former plaque, other
than this there are no markings. Nothing was noted to warrant
a prehistoric date. See photo. Resurveyed at 1:2500 on MSDs.

No suggestions can be made as to the original purpose of this
stone. Local enquiries were not helpful. (4)

SE 7341 8820. Low Cross, a re-used standing stone on Kirkgate Lane
in Appleton-le-Moors. The name Low Cross given to this monument and
its association with High Cross (see SE 78 NW/18) to the north
suggest that the stone has been given a Christian identity as a
wayside marker to identify the road to Lastingham in the medieval
period. The hole and the cut for a plaque are more recent and may
have been for a toll bar at this point. The stone, the boulders and
the modern plinth are included in the scheduling. Scheduled RSM No.
NY/25637. (5)
