SE 7341 8820. Low Cross, a re-used standing stone on Kirkgate Lane in Appleton-le-Moors. The name Low Cross given to this monument and its association with High Cross (see SE 78 NW/18) to the north suggest that the stone has been given a Christian identity as a wayside marker to identify the road to Lastingham in the medieval period. The hole and the cut for a plaque are more recent and may have been for a toll bar at this point. The stone, the boulders and the modern plinth are included in the scheduling. Scheduled RSM No. NY/25637. (5) |
