More information : A fragment of a wheel head cross kept in the S.E. corner of the Priory Church, it is whitish freestone (Filey Brig Stone). Measures 16" acrossthe arms and 6 1/2" high, has Anglo Saxon mouldings, in the centre a boss. 10th-11th century.[44/7972/8655: D.Travis]. (1)
Two fragments of Anglian cross shaft and cross head are at the west end of the south aisle. The cross shaft, of late 9th-early 10th century date, was found in the churchyard wall before 1915 and taken into the church in 1983. The cross-head, dating to the first half of the 10th century, was noted in its present location in 1915. (2) |
