Grid Ref : NU0939020450
Summary : Leper Hospital at Harehope founded pre-1230; dissolved pre-1350.
More information : Hospital under Burton Lazars (1).

"Dedication - St Lazarus(?); founded pre 1230, dissolved pre 1350(?). Leper Hospital. Possibly came to an end at the Black Death"(2). A Hospital was built and organized at Harehope before 1230; some late 13c window jambs and sills and a late 14c or early 15c door-way at Eglingham Hall (Northum 28 NW ) are supposed to have come from Harehope(3).

It is believed that the burial ground of the hospital lay to the SE of the cistern that is situated between the 500' and 600' contour on the E side of Harehope Hill and 1/4 mile NW of the farmhouse. List of Masters 1189-1331 (incomplete)(4).

NU09392045 The traditional site of the Hospital was indicated on the ground by Mr Stafford.

It is a rough rectangular hollow 16.0m x 9.0m x 0.5m deep, with a few stones visible in the surrounding bank. The remains are too
fragmentary and spoiled to be surveyable. No evidence of adjacent buildings etc could be found. (5)
