More information : [SE 6533 0244] Coarse grey Ro. pottery, 20 Oct. 53. (1) RB coarse pottery, wasters, fire bars, burnt clay, etc, reported by Stuart Robinson, Whip Hill, Top Lane, Bramton. Examined by F Gilmour and J. R. Lidster, Doncaster Museum, 9.7.59. Sites noted probably represent kilns, but no excavation has yet been carried out. Pottery in museum. (2) Mr Stuart Robinson indicated on the ground the area, centred at SE 6550 0250, from which pottery has been recovered. A quantity of sherds, all coarse grey ware, was recovered during a perambulation of the site. Mr Robinson also indicated two areas at SE 6470 0173 and SE 6518 0202, from which a large quantity of mediaeval pottery had been collected. (3)
Excavation of this site in 1961 uncovered the remains of two kilns and part of another. Over 500 vessels of ten types represented in the finds; large wide-mouthed bowls were the most frequent. A date of c.300-375 is suggested for the period of manufacture. (4)
