More information : (NU 06122431) CAMP (OE) Hepburn Bell. An irregular shaped earthwork with single rampart enclosing approx 3/4 acre (2) Type B3 (Forts on flat or low-lying ground) (3) An oval shaped earthwork on top of a hill, with the highest point of the hill on the S side of the site. A single rampart of earth and stones, very spread and covered with pasture showing rig and furrow ploughing. On the E, the bank is reduced to an outward-facing scarp, of 4-5m width and 0.5m height. Elsewhere, the bank is 5-7m wide and 0.5-0.7m high on the exterior and 0.2-0.3m high on the interior. (4) Listed as pre-Roman IA multivallate (forts, settlment and enclosures).(5) The work occupies a non-defensive position,but its form and construction support an IA classification. Re-surveyed at 1:2500. (6)
The Iron Age fort of Hepburn Bell is visible as a univallate earthwork on air photographs centred at NU 0612 2431. The perimeter is formed by a bank measuring between 4m and 9m wide, which has been mutilated in parts. The enclosure is 77m long by 62m wide and encloses an area of 0.24ha. (7) |
