Monument Number 558355

Hob Uid: 558355
Location :
North Yorkshire
Craven
Bolton Abbey
Grid Ref : SE0730053900
Summary : Medieval fishponds are visible as earthworks on air photographs. Within the southern part of the precinct of Bolton Priory there are the earthwork remains of three large tanks with associated leats and channels. These earthworks were originally thought to be fishponds but have now been interpreted as the remains of tanning pits which are known from documentary sources to have existed at the priory. Scheduled.
More information : (Centred SE 073 540) Fish Ponds (NR) (1)
two fish ponds - 'A' (SE 0728 5400) with average depth of 1.5m and 'B'(SE 0732 5396) with average depth of 1.4m. Retaining bank appears to be contemporary with construction of pond. The published survey (25") of the fishponds has been revised.(1-3) (See survey with SE 05 SE 1)

A third fishpond, centred at SE 0735 5402, is visible as an earthwork on air photographs. This feature is roughly 29m square and has a leat running from its southern side into a small issue. It is possible that this too can be revised as a tanning pit, however further investigation would be required. Tanks 'A' and 'B' (mentioned above) have been sketch plotted by the Dales NMP Project. More recently they have been mapped at 1:10000 scale for the Lower Wharfedale NMP Project.
