More information : [SE 486 553] Village [GT] (Site of) (1) The hollow way and boundaries of the lost village of Wilstrop are clearly visible to the east and north-east of Wilstrop Hall, the house sites are not so distinct. The depopulation took place in the late 15th century. (2) The site of this village is traceable by a series of scattered earthen baulks and ditches centred SE 4870 5538 which form no coherent pattern and are not surveyable. (3) Wilstrop is unusually well documented from the 13th-15th centuries. Its depopulation and conversion to a park is recorded in Star Chamber Procedures. A documentary source Lists at least twenty-six separate dwelling units with their enclosed gardens behind them. (4) Wilstrop. Listed as DMV. (5)
The earthworks of this settlement still survive and are visible on air photographs taken in 1994. In the area centred at SE 4860 5538 ditched enclosures and hollow ways are visible. Further to the west at SE 4846 5518 three parallel ditches are possibly the remains of a holloway / droveway out to fields. Enclosures of a field system and ridge and furrow are recorded in this area (see SE 45 NE 18 & SE 45 SE 28). (6) |
